An llms.txt file is a markdown text file placed at the root of a website, such as example.com/llms.txt, that gives AI models a short summary of the site and links to its key pages. For a hotel, it is cheap to create but optional: in 2026, no major AI search engine has confirmed using it to choose what to cite.
Key takeaways
- llms.txt was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024; it is a community proposal, not an official web standard.
- Google says it ignores llms.txt for Search, and studies find no link between the file and AI citations.
- For a hotel, robots.txt, crawler access and clear content matter far more; llms.txt is a low-priority extra.
What is an llms.txt file?
The proposal, published on llmstxt.org, describes a markdown file meant to help large language models understand a website quickly, without parsing menus, scripts and layout. Its structure is simple:
- an H1 with the name of the site, the only required element;
- a blockquote with a short summary;
- optional paragraphs with more context;
- H2 sections listing links to key pages, with a short note for each;
- an "Optional" section for secondary links that an AI can skip.

What does an llms.txt file look like for a hotel?
Here is a simplified example for a fictional hotel:
# Hôtel des Lumières
> Boutique hotel with 42 rooms and a spa in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, 5 minutes from the Champs-Élysées.
## Key pages
- [Rooms and suites](https://www.example.com/rooms): room types, sizes, views
- [Spa](https://www.example.com/spa): treatments, opening hours
- [Restaurant](https://www.example.com/restaurant): menus, breakfast
- [Practical information](https://www.example.com/info): access, parking, pets
## Optional
- [Press](https://www.example.com/press)
The file should contain the same facts as your website, kept up to date, with no promotional claims that the pages do not support.
Do AI engines actually read llms.txt?
Not much, for now. Google states that creating an llms.txt file will neither help nor harm a site's visibility in Google Search, which ignores it. John Mueller of Google noted that none of the AI services has said it uses the file. Data point the same way: Ahrefs found that 97% of the llms.txt files it monitored on 137,000 sites received no request at all in May 2026, and SE Ranking found no correlation between having the file and being cited by AI. Coding assistants and some AI agents do read it.
Does my hotel need an llms.txt file?
It is not a priority. Before thinking about llms.txt, a hotel should make sure that:
- its robots.txt allows Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot, the crawler that feeds ChatGPT search;
- its key pages are indexed, fast and readable without JavaScript tricks;
- its facts are consistent across the website, Google and the OTAs.
Once these are in place, adding an llms.txt costs little and does no harm. These priorities are detailed in our guides to GEO for hotels and to getting recommended by ChatGPT.
How do you add an llms.txt file on Webflow?
Webflow lets you upload the file natively: in Site settings, open the SEO tab, go to the LLMs.txt section and click Upload file. The file must be UTF-8 encoded and under 100 KB. After publishing, it is served at the root of your custom domain, for example example.com/llms.txt, but not on the Webflow staging domain. Learn more about how a CMS like Webflow works.
How does Influence Society approach llms.txt?
At Influence Society, we do not sell llms.txt as a shortcut to AI visibility. We add it to the Webflow sites we manage when the basics are solid, as a clean summary of the hotel, and spend most of the effort on what AI engines demonstrably use: indexable pages, consistent listings and reviews.
